This group is formed to facilitate discussion between Christians and atheists (but people of all faiths are welcome and encouraged to attend). Does either group have valid reasons for choosing their "belief system?" (Please only attend if you can discuss these topics calmly and respectfully.) … This group is all about taking a book on one of these fascinating subjects to act as the match to ignite discussion and exploration. Our intention is to gain some knowledge on a variety of topics, come together as a group of friends and help each other navigate the strange, confusing and amazing world of Spirituality. We ask that you be at least 21 as the meeting may be held in either coffee shops or bars.
We'll meet once a month to discuss current and classic works selected by the group. To start, meetings will take place in my home; members willing, they may rotate to others' homes and/or public gathering spaces, such as cafes, wine bars, or parks.
This discussion group is a chance to meet new friends and to share ideas about the separation of church and state. It is free and open to the public. Please join us and bring a friend. Although you may order food or drink, there is no requirement that you do so. At the beginning of each meeting we allow some time for people to order and talk informally with new and not-so-new friends. We usually allow time for anyone to address the group to share any church-state announcements, issues or items o …

First of all, anyone thinking about joining this group should be aware that our discussions are expected to be strongly based on reason & rationality. This means the kind of logical, rigorous thinking that takes place in science & philosophy for example (as opposed to the many other non-rational varieties of thinking & belief such as: mystical, supernatural, spiritual, new age, pseudo-scientific, anti-scientific, etc). If you don’t think in this logical-scientific way, don’t like to think in thi …
… This will be a group for study, for discussion, for discovery and perhaps even creation of ideas. It is for those who value novelty, creativity, cleverness, wit, words, honesty, skepticism, inquiry, and intelligence in all its forms. We who eschew dogmatism, authority, institutions, rules, and other societal-bio-evolutionary pressures in order that we may attempt to think for ourselves. We will examine ideas from all fields of human intellectual endeavor, from: Philosophy, psychology, …

We are a group of book-lovers who meet once a month for a lively discussion. We read both fiction and non-fiction books and are open to all genres except romance. The books are selected 2-3 times a year through a polling process. Active members get to suggest books, then a poll is created to decide on which of those books we will read. We understand that not everyone is able to finish the book before each meeting. Don’t let that stop you from coming to our monthly meetings. There is a …
… The moderator's main roles are to monitor the 'temperature' of the meeting to keep it from boiling over, and to also try to make sure everyone gets a chance to talk (no one person dominating the discussion). 2. Don't try to convince and convert others. Simply share your opinion. If you want to convert others, that is a noble idea, but must be done outside the meeting. Consider building a relationship as a friend first. These meetings can introduce you to potential friends of different viewpoints …

Thank you for joining Westside Astrology Study Group. I am Jessica, your group organizer. Once upon a time I created another astrology group here on Meetup which I call Sun, Moon & Stars Meetup of Portland. In addition to that group I have decided to start a side-group here, especially for meeting on the West-side of Portland. to study and discuss astrology in libraries, over coffee, etc. That would be the purpose of this group. Sun, Moon & Stars will be more of a group f …

Hello! Sick of trudging all the way to the Eastside? This is a group for people in the NoPo/Overlook/Killingsworth/PCC/St.
Johns area. We will meet primarily around close-in North Portland and close-in NW. Although the group will focus more on books, we can also have discussions on just about anything!
The North ("NoPo") is a great area that is often overlooked from the rest of Portland. Traditionally thought of as sort of a grungy area of town, the "fifth quarter of Portland" is actually is a m …
Well, I for one, love to read. I would also love to take reading to the next level with a little discussion. I have a few things in mind for this book club: 1) Read some stuff. Obvs. 2) Use some brain power to think and discuss. 3) Meet other Portland women in my age range (early 30s). 4) Have a nice evening once a month despite rain clouds. 5) Maybe have a glass of wine/beer? Hmmm? Or tea. Who's with me?
This book club will meet once a month to discuss sci-fi or fantasy books voted on by members. We will choose from the list of 100 top picks of NPR listeners (the 60,000 who voted can't be too far off!). http://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/13908

“A classic is classic not because it conforms to certain structural rules, or fits certain definitions (of which its author had quite probably never heard). It is classic because of a certain eternal and irrepressible freshness.” Edith Wharton We read one classic book each month and then meet at a coffee shop to discuss it. Discussions are typically on the first Sunday of the month at varying coffee shops, are casual and enhanced by questions and analysis that members bring. Meeting attend …
Wine country is amazing, but we were lacking a book club which fueled me with the idea to start a casual monthly book club. We are a small group who enjoys good books, great restaurants, and even better conversation. Each month, a different member "hosts" the meeting. It is up to that person to choose our book, the restaurant to meet at, and lead our discussion. Any book is fair game (we have read mysteries, historical fiction, memoirs, and much more to come) and any restaurant is open to us …
For avid readers who live in the Museum Place Apartments. Let's read, discuss, eat and laugh together!
We read short selections on ethics and then apply them to specific current (and perennial) events. There are about a dozen very nice participants, thoughtful folk who are willing to ask and discuss what should we do?
