Do you love literature and perhaps music and art as well--but somehow you’ve never really “got” poetry? Would you like to learn to get the joy from poems you get from other works of art without going through English Lit 101 again? If your answers are yes I can help. It started with a friend whom I met in discussion groups of Joyce’s Ulysses and Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. He loved literature and music (he was a Jazz musician and is very knowledgeable about classical music as well). Yet, …
The group meets the last Wednesday of every month to discuss New Yorker essays and short stories. The PLUS is a pre-meeting, separate discussion of a book ( fiction or non-fiction ) chosen in advance by the group. A member may participate in The New Yorker meeting without joining the book discussion. All essays, short stories, and books are chosen at each meeting by the group. In some cases the group may decided to devote multiple sessions to a book.

We’re a discussion group with a focus on rationality, philosophy, science, technology, skepticism and ethics. We choose members who are friendly, intellectually curious, intelligent, non-religious, and rationally-minded – meaning that we’re more interested in figuring out the truth together than in proving ourselves right, or in arguing for the sake of arguing. Our members are young, almost all in the range of 20 to 35 years old. Our meetings are usually informal group discussions at someone’s a …

This is a new MeetUp, so I'll definitely be open to suggestions regarding the best way to organize our meet ups. Here's what the current plan is: Ea …

Each month, we will read and discuss and/or write about a great classic written by various American or European authors. We will meet at a coffee/tea shop or a wine bar each month to discuss the book of the month and share anything we have written about the book, if designated as an optional assignment.
